Roskilde Festival

This is what Roskilde will look like this weekend, (picture showing the biggest stage "Orange Stage" mid-concert). Bands officially start playing Thursday, but Sunday began the period known fondly as "warm-up" ... where thousands of young Danes make it an excuse to get their tents set up early and start drinking!!

As Roskilde typically sells out early, many Danes look for "volunteer" work in exchange for free passes. Tickets are about $270 a piece, so we figured it would also be more economical to volunteer our time instead. Plus, the festival folks didn't seem to think it was a problem that Kristin didn't speak Dansk. Whatevs!! :) Here Kristin is hard at work patrolling the camping area looking for riff-raff.Fireman Soren, at your service. (Yes, that's a "fire extinguisher" on his back, not a ghostbusting machine).
Colorful tents, and camp names to boot! (That's Camp Mo-Fo in the back. Those clever Danes...)Danes like to drink ... and start early. Our Sunday shift started at 7am, and about 1/3 of the area we patrolled were already drunk and /or passed out. Fun, fun, fun!
Just cruisin' around. "Hey man, which one is my tent?"
Service Vagt (Service Guard) Kristin - also known as El Conquistadore.
Finally - our shift is over! Back at the tent, and ... is it starting to rain?
Second Shift - Day 2, Monday. We come across a group of Borats on our way to Camp H to begin our day of community service.
Shift 1 - Toilet Patrol. It's really not as bad as it seems: we basically had to replace toilet paper, make sure no one was passed out inside, etc. Plus, when it starts to pour, the toilet roll "bunker" is a great place to hide and wait out the rain!! Hmm... so, why am I subjecting myself to this type of slave labor again?
Aw yeah ... that's why. :)
Looks like other campers have the same idea... port-o-potties make a GREAT place to wait out the storm!!
Aw... toilet shift is over. Now we're on trash pick-up. Let's just wait out the rain a little more in the storage shed w/ a nice cup of hot tea. Cheers!
Hmm... so much for that idea. Rain doesn't seem to be letting up ... and the Danes continue to drink despite the rain. Heck, most even embrace it. Take for example Owl-Hat Man. He loves the mud!!
Some campers have these sick set-ups. Club Camp turned into a rave on our way back to the car after our shift. No time for thumping electronica. Kristin & Soren seem to have picked up nasty colds earlier in the week, and it's back to Copenhagen for a couple of days to ride out the illness. Hope the rain is gone by Thursday!!

Hey woman,

About 15 of my friends that I worked with in Kosovo are arriving tomorrow for the festival. If you see a drunk Swede named Nic wearing a camelback full of vodka, two large Americans of Norweigian descent - Sven and Thor, an American Molly, an Austrian Theresa, a British Gail, a Canadian Sonja, a Indian-American Sherwin, a 6-foot Norweigian goddess Tove, a tiny Swedish Sofia.... well, that's my crew. Hug em & tell them all I said HI. :D
